Aditional NC Master account security feature added

[:1]Hey guys, came across a tweet by Martin on twitter informing us of a new security feature on the NCSOFT master account, hope this is the right place to post this, but thought it deserved its own thread.

Step Three: New Security Feature

The third step is new! This week, we will be enabling a new security feature that verifies that you are logging in to your NCsoft Master Account with a computer authorized by you. If someone attempts to log into your NCsoft Master Account from a different computer, access will be blocked until that person can answer specific security questions.

Someone attempting to access from a different computer will see a message like this: “You are trying to log in for a computer that has not been approved by this account. For security purposes, please answer these security questions to verify this computer's use.” If that’s you – great! You answer the questions and you’re in. If that’s someone else – for example, a would-be account thief – that person will be unable to answer the questions and therefore will be blocked from accessing the NCMA.

For your convenience, you will be able to add additional computers to the “safe list,” if you so desire. Or you can simply answer the security questions and access from that computer on a one-time basis. For those computers on your "safe list," you'll be able to access by inputting your User Name, Password, and Character Name, as usual.

Also; wohoo, about time something happened on that front. I do expect some serious security-beefing-uppage coming our way the closer GW2 is to release though.|||I guess we will find out the more in depth details tomorrow, as Gaile posted this on the talk page.

What "Now" Means

It occurs to me that I wrote that you can add those security questions "now" when the system won't be in place until tomorrow. So hold off on trying to do that, players, until you see the website announcement that the new feature is good to go. Thanks! -- Gaile 02:11, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

Now i think i may have misread the article, because from the sounds of it, it was for the NC master account only, meaning GW and Aion and whatever other games the player has on it would still themselves be as secure as they are today, it would just be the master account that has more security, not the game account's.

But reading this other quote from Gaile.

I am pretty darn happy about this one, too. We need to put as many stumbling blocks to those #*%&! account thieves while still making it easy for us legit people to get onto our accounts. :) -- Gaile 05:19, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

Makes me think that the "Safe PC" list for the master account will also apply to the games on that master account, meaning i could only sign into my GW account on one of the safe PC's on my Master account list, and that even if someone got my password and username and chara name, they still couldn't log in unless it was on my "Safe list" PC's.

If so that's a pretty major security beef up, and a nice alternative to and authenticator type upgrade.

Could someone with better reading comprehension than me state if I'm correct with my idea that it applies to the game accounts too? or if it is just for the master account only like I'm reading it?

Either way more security is always good

Using a shortened URL to discuss a soon to be implemented security feature from NCSoft.

Nice to see them starting as they mean to go.

I'd hope not. MY IP address changes all the time.|||Quote:

It seems to be something that you yourself have to activate.

What do I do now?

In order to get this system in place, you will be asked to answer some additional security questions related to your NCsoft Master Account. We encourage you to do that now, to take advantage of this additional layer of security.

In other words, the system will be activated tomorrow, but you yourself have to choose weather to enable it or not on your own account, so you could activate it tommorow, or in 2 weeks, or longer, just find your login details, log in, activate it, and your good to go

Added security is nice, and this sounds solid... but I do dislike the paperwork involved.|||nice.......no one has ever attempted to hack my account, that's the advantage of having a difficult account name ;)|||Quote:

I think we are in the same boat...though I DO remember having to change my password since mine was too long and had symbols in it (from before it was a master account)....though I dont remember anything else

so if we DONT go in and 'activate' this we still should not have a problem right?

RIGHT???

still wish they would just have enter old password...that was something nice and easy ah well...at least they are TRYING.
